Halloween Special - Nosferatu

Posted on 10/27/2009 -

Halloween is this Saturday.  I know that people all over the place have movies and such going on.  This is the first real holiday of The Great Machine's life, so I figured I'd do something.  This year, I want to talk about more of the lesser known titles. Nothing abuot Resident Evil, not Silent Hill or Dead Space or any of that.  Just, something different in general.  So first, I'll blab about the PC action-survival horror game, Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi.

*I am using youtube. Sorry, I couldn't find any other gameplay and the game didn't feel like working on my machine.

Hehe, I'm using video.  Anyway, there is the intro.  It's pretty basic the understand.  The story isn't complicated.  It's simple, run in, grab your family, and run out.  Back when my computer ran the game fine, I always ended up shooting the family members in moments of panic.

The game is perfect in the way that it always keeps you on your toes.  You never know when a monster is going to pop out and get you.  The music is SUPERB, it matches the background and the general mood of the game.  You're walking (there is a way to walk, I dunno why people in videos always run) around a dark corner...the music is all quiet...there's a door a head....you go up....push it open...then the music speeds up and you fire!  ....only to find your dead grandmother on the floor.  Bastard >:U  Just kidding, but yes, moments like that do happen.  There is just this shadow or a figure and the music grabs your ankles.  The monsters are random too, so you can't memorize where they are and rush through.

Best horror game I've ever played.  I don't really know what Idol FX (developers for this game) are doing.  They might have folded, but I can't find anything official.  I guess it's not a surprise, as Nosferatu was there only successful game.  By the way, there is a demo. It does cut out stuff in the beginning part (as seen in the video right above) but at least you get a feel for the game.

We aren't done though.  While searching on wikipedia for more general knowledge of Nosferatu (the vampire, not the game XD), I found out another game was made...for the SNES.  I looked at it...then I saw the developers.

"Seta Corporation"  Does it seem familiar?  Maybe not, but I imagine most of you watch The Angry Video Game Nerd.  Remember The Wizard of Oz?  Yep, same company who made that crap made, Nosferatu.  Of course, it's unfair to blast a company based off 1 bad game, and the Nerd exaggerates things at times, so I don't know if the Wizard of Oz is truly bad, but I have no interest in finding out anytime soon. Anyway, onto Nosferatu!

The intro is really hard to take seriously with spelling and grammar errors. "Every night, transforming into a bat or wolf, he seeks innocent blood, a vampire."  "None know the victims fate, of those taken to his distance and forbidding castle. " "Makes his way to the accursed place"  The first sentence really confuses me.  How the hell did a wolf get into this mix?  Anyway...

Shadax101's comment actually sums this game up nicely. (A smart comment from the youtubers for once, woo!)  "This is one of those games I never even knew existed.

When I saw the 1st level, I thought this game was so incredibly cool. But sadly, the rest of the game was exactly the same, just less atmospheric :S

Real shame, if they had just put some more detail and creativity into this one it could have been one of the best snes games."

It's dot on .  The basis of this game is awesome. However...once you start playing...it goes to poo.  The controls are slow, the music is nearly non-existent, and why the crap is he punching skeletons?  Is it too much of a pussy for a sword, or a pair of spiked gloves or anything?  The atmospheres get boring and the game becomes such a snore after the 2nd room...as in...the 1st level after you push the block out of the way.  There is combo's and stuff you can pull while fighting...but really...You're fighting goblins and frankensteins and such. Why on Earth would you use fists?!

...not much to say anyway.  Just thought I'd have both games with 3 videos.

So there you have it.  A good Nosferatu game, and a bad one.  Boy, I should really watch the movie sometime, that'd be a fun party to see.

Nosferatu on a ship.  How awesome is that?
